Come visit our 1900’s Victorian farmhouse full of historic charm: a wrap around porch, original unpainted woodwork, and brass hardware. Steeped in craftsmanship and turn of the century style, our 1900’s Victorian farmhouse is the house of our dreams.
The Turn Of The Century Dream
Ever since I was a little girl I have been facinated with the Victorian era. The image of tea on a veranda or wearing a flowy white nightgown while carrying a candle seemed to idilyc in my mind. So simple and classy.
As I grew older I began learning more about architectural styles, and sometime in my early 30’s I found a book at our local library all about Victorian homes in our state. Each style was exemplified with images of actual homes from various styles; Queen Anne, Gothic, American Four Square,…I never knew there were so many. It was around this time that a social media influencer whom I follow purchased a farmhouse and I knew her style reflected my own heart….Victorain Farmhouse!
Victorian Farmhouse
To me, Victorian farmhouse is the perfect blend of styles. Many Victorian era homes features maximalist architecture, with ornate details and textures. Whether it’s scallops in the eaves, rosettes and moldings inside, detailed railings and porches, or the many eaves and rooflines, there is so much charm in a Victorian home. Part of that charm is also the craftsmanship. The quality and detail that went into making each piece ornate and solid is something that is not equalled in newer construction. Even things like door hinges, which are rarely seen, boast intricate detail.
While I love the sophistication and beauty Victorian homes can bring, there is also a lived in homey atmosphere when paired with country living. Farmhouses are often more simplified than the exquisite Queen Anne “dollhouses” and allow for not everything to be “perfect” like a museum that needs to be preserved as a historical artifact. Victorian farmhouse is a blend of both worlds, that allows me to enjoy and display the beauty of the past, yet live as a family in the present day. My perfect fit.
The American Dream
My husband and I have always wanted a farm. We both grew up on acres with animals and the allure of raising our kids in the country with a big red barn was very strong. Shortly after having our second child we were able to purchase an American Four Square in town on a large lot. With all original hardwood floors, two staircases, a front porch, and a wrap around white picket fence with flower beds everywhere, it was our “American Dream” house. We loved it there, except for one thing….it wasn’t in the country.
Valley View Farm
Then in 2023, God granted us the most unexpected gift. Our Victorian farmhouse, with mostly original unpainted woodwork, an ornate wrap around porch, and ten acres!
While it didn’t meet every dream on my wish list in all the way I had hoped, it did check every single box, and we are so blessed and thankful to live here. Let me give you a tour of the place call home, and have lovingly named Valley View Farm.
The House
The Woodwork
Our house boasts three sets of pocket doors like these in the main living area. Many of the original doors are still in place with their brass hardware.
The baseboards are tall and ornate made of two pieces, a base and a cap. Each doorway is cased with fluted style trim, headers, and blocks.
The Fixtures
The untouched areas of the house all feature brass hardware with a nice patina. Each set of pocket doors features recessed handles like those shown below, and we have many of the working skeleton keys for both the pocket and passage doors.
The Acreage
Our ten acres holds a large hill which slopes in all directions. The previous owners had planted many trees in the yard and pasture areas, and some of the land was left to be natural unmanaged forest. Several pear trees, walnuts, and edible berries are on the property.
