After creating a simple hand sewn felt doll pattern, the logical next step was making some dress up clothes to go with it. Here you will find some basic patterns to accompany those felt dolls.

  • Coordinating Thread or Embroidery Floss
  • Needle
  • Sharp Scissors

Cut the Felt Doll Clothes

First gather all your necessary supplies. Cut out the paper pattern pieces for the outfits you have chosen. Trace the pattern onto a piece of felt. Cut out the clothing with sharp scissors by following along the traced lines.

Feel free to use each paper pattern more than once for a more diverse wardrobe.

Consider using patterned felts for more detailed clothing designs.

Felt Hat Special Instructions

The hat is the only clothing item in the basic felt clothes patterns that requires two pieces.

Cut two felt pieces of the same color using the hat pattern piece.

Using a coordinating color of thread, sew around the upper outer edge using a whip stitch. Leave the bottom open. Be sure to make small stitches to allow the maximum amount of room for the head of the doll to fit through the opening at the bottom of the hat.

Printing Instructions

Once you download the PDF pattern, be sure to print it with settings set to “fill the whole page”. The download is 8.5 x11 inches with standard margins for printing already built into it. Print the image at 100%. The bar at the bottom of the pattern is for scale. When printed properly it should be one inch long. Printing to scale assures congruency among patterns. So the doll, clothing, and accessories all fit together properly.

How do the clothes attach to the doll?
Is there a back to the outfit.

At this time the clothes only go on the front of the dolls. The backing of the outfit is felt. Felt naturally will have some stick to other felt or flannel. You could also add a small dot of velcro (hook side) to the back of each outfit for a stronger hold. I’m working on an improved pattern with magnetic capabilities. Hopefully coming soon!
