Crispy homemade bacon crumbles made in the oven. Perfect for topping eggs, soup, baked potatoes, and more.
Who doesn’t love bacon? In our home we certainly do.
From time to time our small town grocer offers bulk boxes of bacon cut ends and bits. You never quite know what you are going to get, sometimes they are great slices, other times you get thick chunks of ham and lots of fat. However, the price per pound is significantly less than traditional packages, and it makes the perfect option for making bacon bits.
The dog doesn’t mind a bit of the fat either!
Even if you don’t have the option to buy bacon in bulk, you can still use this crumble recipe to make bacon crumbles homemade from whatever bacon you have. Extra credit if you cure and prepare your own pork belly bacon. I am not there yet, but this is still a great way to make the crunchy bits we all enjoy so much.
Homemade Bacon Crumbles
Ingredients:
- Bacon
Supplies:
- Baking Sheet
- Aluminum Foil
- Kitchen Scissors
- Collander
- Paper Towels
Let’s Cook Some Bacon Crumbles!
Preheat your oven to 425 F.
Begin by lining your baking sheet with aluminum foil. I prefer to get the extra wide heavy duty foil that perfectly fits over my standard half sheet baking pan.
If you need to use multiple strips to cover your pan consider crimping them together with a fold to create one seamless sheet. This will ease in cleanup later. If not, the recipe will still work fine, just line your pan with sufficient foil to cover the bottom.
Cut the Crumbles
Next take your strips or ends of bacon and cut it into tiny pieces using your kitchen scissors. You can choose to trim some of the fat at this point, but don’t remove all of it because bacon grease is great for cooking and keeps the meat from drying out too much.
Spread the cut bacon pieces evenly across your pan.
Bake the Bacon
Place the baking sheet with the bacon into the oven on a middle rack. Bake 20-30 minutes until the crumbles have reached your preferred doneness.
Drain and Store
While the bacon is cooking, line the bottom of a colander with two layers of paper towel. Set the colander over a large bowl or plate to catch any drippings.
When the bacon crumbles are done, remove them from the oven and transfer them into the colander to drain.
Finally, once cooled, package in plastic zipper bags or freezer safe storage containers. Freeze until ready to use.
