Morning Detox Tea

Staring honey, lemon, and apple cider vinegar, this simple morning ‘detox tea’ is a great addition to a healthy morning routine.

Why detox?

Lemon has many purifying qualities, and supports the cleansing of the liver.

Apple cider vinegar with the mother contains helpful probiotics.

Interestingly, the two acidic ingredients in this ‘tea’ actually help make your overall body pH LESS acidic.  That’s a good thing. Balancing your body’s pH has been shown to have many health benefits, including reducing your risk for cancer.

What about my teeth?

One of my biggest concerns with drinking and eating anything acidic is the effect on my teeth. We’ve all been taught that acid is bad for enamel, and it is. However, our saliva is constantly running over our teeth keeping them moist and protected.

The pH of your body affects the pH of your spit 24/7. Which means if you have acidity in your body, you have acidity in your mouth, and that creates weakened enamel and cavities. However, if your overall body pH is basic (which isn’t the case for most people), that would produce in a higher pH in your mouth which can result in tartar build up rather than decay.

According to my dental hygienist, drinking something acidic will affect the pH of your mouth for about 20 minutes. So when drinking something like this tea (or coffee) it is better to drink the entire thing in one sitting rather than sipping on it over time. Each sip will lower the pH of your mouth, and your saliva will have to neutralize it back to your bodily pH once again. My hygienist suggested drinking ACV or other acidic supplements quickly, or as a “shot”, and then following it with a big rinse of water to help get that acidity out of your mouth as quickly as possible.

How to get the best benefit from a detox tea…

I have read recommendations that you consume this tea on an empty stomach 15-20 minutes before eating breakfast in the morning for optimal benefits.
